Likely to appeal exclusively to the ‘Under 8′ demographic – and yet harmless enough not to offend parents who will no doubt accompany their kids – The Smurfs is a formulaic, fish-out-of-water adventure featuring the little blue stars of that popular 80s cartoon series. There’s very little that’s original or new here, the only bright spot being Hank Azaria’s performance as the gleefully depraved Gargamel, and the acidic barbs he directs at his cat Azrael. The Smurfs themselves are mostly bland, and particularly Papa Smurf’s sermons on family values are likely to make you yawn.I’m going with two out of five for The Smurfs. It’s strictly for the little ones who might enjoy the toilet-centric gags and the overall cutesy tone of the film!

The animation is strictly mediocre, with The Smurfs' resembling a cross-breed between Avatar and Megamind. With consistently bad enactments, voice-cast or live-action, The Smurfs leaves little for it to be recommended. Not only it is Smurfingly unimaginative, it is wholly clichéd and magicless, at times even dumb. Look out for a culminating conversation between Neil Patrick and his boss, where he explains her significance of 'blue moon'. You'd go colourless.

What’s Good: The cute Smurfs and their eccentric English; the superior quality of animation; the performances. What’s Bad: The simplistic story that will appeal only to the kids; the absence of laugh-a-minute comedy and heart-rending emotions.Verdict: The Smurfs is a good fare for the kids and, at best, it will do average business at the Indian box-office.

Despite the interminable mugging, running and jumping, the proceedings are devoid of energy. Worse still, the sermonising by the Smurf patriarch (voiced by comic old-timer Jonathan Winters) tends to get heavy-handed.All in all, The Smurfs yields some enjoyable moments for the kids. But that’s it.

The film, predictably remains a kid’s film. It doesn’t have much to offer other than thrills and animation. The noisy, live action/animated flick is unable to capture the imagination of the viewer. Being a 3D film, one expects some marvelous special effects which unfortunately are missing. Harris works hard to make the movie work, at one point literally pointing out every single absurdity of the Surfs` entire existence, which makes for a funny moment despite undermining the whole premise.Watch this film only if you have no other film to watch. Or if you are a hardcore Smurf fan. If neither, then it’s safe to give this one a miss.
