Crazy Stupid Love Movie Review

Ratings:3/5 Reviewer:Rajeev Masand Site:IBNLive
Crazy Stupid Love is a funny and touching film with characters so likeable, it’s hard to judge them even when they do foolish things. Disguised as a breezy rom-com, Crazy Stupid Love is in fact a smart film that offers surprisingly perceptive insights into adult pain. At the same time it manages to remain consistently funny, thanks to sharp performances by its two male leads. The film’s criss-crossing subplots come together in a predictable fashion, and there are times the story feels too stretched for its own good.Yet, Crazy Stupid Love is a film that benefits enormously from its talented, delicious cast whose very presence makes it worth watching.I’m going with three out of five for Crazy Stupid Love. Like the real thing itself, it mixes pain with pleasure. What’s not to like?

It may be a romantic story all over again but there is a freshness to Crazy Stupid Love which makes it eminently watchable. The characters are familiar: a middle-aged couple, a young couple and a teenage couple. Yet, their trajectory of romance is not so familiar. But nothing, just nothing is run-of-the-mill here, neither the characters nor the screenplay. The drama is finely nuanced with little touches that raise the emotional quotient to a high level while the humour is subtle, bordering on mild amusement. A charming watch, don't forget to take time out for Crazy Stupid Love, despite the crazy, stupid title.

KNOW what's crazy and stupid, and won't get you any love? Wearing sneakers to a fancy restaurant when you are in your 40s and have Juliane Moore for a wife. This being the movies, it takes an expensive-looking Jacob (Gosling) to tell Cal (Carell) that. For there are long periods where the film labours under its own title, trying to fit to each of the three words, separated by the very self-conscious two commas, and capped by the self-absorbent full stop.Well past the midway mark, Hannah and Jacob do get together in a sequence that gives you an idea where the film may have wanted to go.
